CBC Count Results 2007
Montrose 2007 CBC
For the Dec 16 Montrose Christmas bird count there were 11 birders in the field
and 3 counting at feeders. It was a beautiful day with a low of 9 and a high of 30. The day
was clear and the wind mostly calm. We were fortunate to have more open water than in
the last two years. Total species was 75. A Gray Catbird at Bill Harris's feeder and a dark
morph Ferruginous Hawk seen by two parties were the best birds. Just missed Bohemian
Waxwings for the count week. The Russian olive grove across the foot bridge from Baldridge park has been removed as part of an invasive plant eradication program. Those trees were a CBC hot spot for Bluebirds, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Cedar Waxwings,
Townsend's Solitaires, Robins and more. I guess one has to be a birder to like Russian
olives and sewage ponds.

Gunnison 2007 CBC
Hi Folks,
Here are the final results for the 2007 Gunnison Christmas Bird Count. Cold weather (it was -20 degrees when we started) and deep snow cut down on our mobility and species diversity this year. Twenty two hardy souls helped with the count including 5 kids. In addition, several folks helped with counts at their feeders. This is what we found.

That is 41 species and 4151 individuals on count day and an additional 3 species and 11 individuals during the Count Week. Our most unusual species were the Scrub Jay which has been visiting a feeder since the fall and a lone Spotted Towhee. Collared Doves continue to populate the area with numbers doubled from last year and the lone Robin noted during count week stood in contrast to the hundreds we counted last year when it was quite a bit warmer. Rosy Finches were in abundance with the heavy snows pushing them down from higher elevations earlier than usual. A large percentage of our recorded species were seen at feeders throughout the valley as other food supplies were covered with snow. A number of regular birds on our Christmas count were absent this year. We searched in vain for Canada Goose, Northern Harrier, Sharp Shinned Hawk, Rough Legged Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Brown Creeper, and White Crowned Sparrow. Many thanks to everyone that made this a successful count. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hotchkiss 2007 CBC
The 40th Hotchkiss Christmas Bird Count was held yesterday, December 15th, on a cold but sunny day. A bank in Hotchkiss told Andrea Robinsong and I that it was -1 degree Fahrenheit when drove through town on our way to search for owls. It was definitely one of those mid-winter days when you appreciate every degree you can get. 13 stellar observers recorded 76 species including a record-high 24 Steller’s Jays. Many high elevation birds had ventured down to our level and were enjoyed by observers, including 2 Gray-crowned Rosy-finches and 28 Brown-capped Rosy-Finches.
Here’s a list of species detected this year that are infrequently detected on this count and of species that were more abundant this year than usual (comparisons date back to 1989 only):
Chukar – 9
Bald Eagle – 23
Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawk – 1
Ferruginous Hawk – 1
Rough-legged Hawk – 15 (second highest total, in 1998 there were 17)
Merlin – 1
Prairie Falcon – count week
Barn Owl – 1
Great Horned Owl – 2
Northern Pygmy-Owl – 1 (with a freshly captured Spotted Towhee)
*just for fun; the average weight of a Spotted Towhee is 40 grams and a Northern Pygmy-Owl is 70 grams (weights from the Sibley guide)
Lewis’s Woodpecker – 20 (second highest total; there were 24 in 2000)
Northern Shrike – 1
Stellar’s Jay – 24

Delta 2007 CBC\
Hi all,
Today was the Delta Christmas Bird Count. Though there were only 7 of us, we

Cackling, and Canada), Lincoln's Sparrow (Confluence Park), Hermit Thrush

Teal (southern Delta), and a dark-morph Rough-legged Hawk in Delta. Also of
note was a flock of 145 Mourning Doves near Fruitgrower's Reservoir. The
