Saturday, Sept. 11, Public Bird Banding, Ridgway State Park
This event will be held at the Dallas Creek entrance to Ridgway State Park from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Observe the work of skilled bird banders who will be in the area for the chapter’s bird banding education program. It’s a chance for a close look at birds you may only have seen moving from branch to branch. You may even get a chance to hold a banded bird before it is released into the wild.
Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12, Ouray County Bird Count Game
“There is a new game in town,” reports Coen Dexter, who again is organizing a friendly competition. The rules of the new game call for birders to predict which birds they will see. Points are awarded or subtracted based on how well birders meet their predictions. Birders can join a group or bird independently. The reporting station for the event will be the visitor center at Ridgway State Park. Coen will be at the visitor center at 8 a.m. each day and will have a few Ouray Count bird lists for those who need them. For more information, contact Coen Dexter at 970-864-7195 or by e-mail at coenbrenda@yahoo.com.
Saturday, Oct. 30, Delta County Lakes and Reservoirs Field Trip
Meet at Confluence Park at 9 a.m. in the big parking lot on the east side of the lake. We'll look at birds on the lakes and maybe take a hike on trails to see what late migrants are around (weather will dictate whether or not we'll do this). Next, we can go to Sweitzer Lake State Park (day pass or annual pass required for all vehicles) and then to Fruitgrowers Reservoir. “Always a good time for loons, gulls, and other interesting stuff,” says trip organizer Jason Beason. Bring lunch and something to drink (hot or cold). Contact Jason at 970-527-4625 for more details.
