Save the Date! Annual Meeting

March 5, 2026 5:30 PM - 8:30 p.m. Annual Meeting of the Black Canyon Audubon Society. Buffet Dinner at Remington’s, Bridges Golf and Country Club, 2500 Bridges Ave, Montrose, CO 81401.

Christopher Preston, author of Tenacious Beasts, Wildlife Recoveries that Change How We Think About Animals, is our keynote speaker for the 2026 Black Canyon Audubon Society Annual Meeting.  Tenacious Beasts was the winner of the High Plains International Book Award 2024 (non-fiction), received First Honorable Mention in the Rachel Carson Environmental Book Awards 2024, and was included in the New Yorker’s Best Books of 2023.

Christopher Preston is a professor of philosophy at the University of Montana in Missoula. He has Colorado connections as he attended Colorado State University in Ft. Collins for his Master’s degree and has family in Denver. Preston will share success stories of humpback and sperm whales, bears, wolves, peregrine falcons and several other species, including a discussion of the “messy business” of killing barred owls to support spotted owl recovery. Preston suggests that species recovery offers a unique chance to change the way we think about animals.

Colorado Streams and Wetlands Protected by New Regulations

Colorado water regulators have approved an extensive set of rules designed to protect thousands of miles of streams and vast wetlands, stepping up as one of the first states in the nation to do so.  The rules cover dozens of issues related to how the state will issue permits dictating how construction, homebuilding and farming activities that disturb waters and wetlands can occur.
